The Tertio Millennio Film Fest of the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo, which has reached its 19th edition and was inaugurated by St.John Paul II in 1997, with the patronage of the Pontifical Council of Culture and the Pontifical Council of Social Communication, with the support of the General Cinema Direction MiBACT, profoundly renews itself in the name of inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue. Taking its inspiration from the “Cortile dei Gentili” promoted by His Heminence Card. Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council of Culture, the Tertio Millennio included the representatives of the Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim Communities in the Selection committee of the Festival with the purpose of developing a cinematographic proposal in the name of peace.
Inter-religious dialogue, as Pope Francis underlines, «is an essential condition for peace and for this reason it is a duty for all believers» (cfr. Evangelii gaudium, 250).
The Festival, presided over by father Davide Milani (President Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo) and under the general direction of Antonio Urrata (Director General Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo), foresees a Selection Committee, made up of delegates of the religious Communities and representatives of the world of cinematographic culture and industry, in addition to an Advisory Committee, made up of personalities of the cinematographic and audiovisual sector. The Tertio Millennio Film Fest wishes to become a space where different religions and cultures can meet freely, where it is possible to make a proposal for peace and sharing. As per tradition, the event does not have a competition section, but wants to give space to the most interesting and courageous world titles in the framework of the understanding of the other.
On the occasion of the Festival presentation ceremony, S.E. il Card. Gianfranco Ravasi said: “We consider cinema to be one of the great contemporary artistic expressions and the renewal of Tertio Millennio festival wants to accompany this meeting among different voices, through the joint presence of different cultures, ethnic groups and religious expressions: all this, however, looking for selection of films not to be tempted by an adjective, ‘religious’, which would end up crystallizing the whole speech. We do not want apologetic productions. The spiritual expression is obtained from the artistic quality of the work, just think of filmmakers like Pasolini and Bresson, able in a secular way to reach through their films a transcendent charge”. “A truly commendable initiative, because I believe there are things that theology can not say, while art does. Cinema can reach areas that other artistic expressions do not reach, thanks to a specificity of communication that, in a framework that is not apologetic and through the involvement of different religious expressions, allows us a form of dialogue towards which perhaps we are not yet totally used to it”, said prof. Fulvio Ferrario, Dean of the Waldensian Faculty of Theology. To which Prof. Shahrzad Houshmand, professor of Islamic Studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, echoes: “The Islamic community can not but share this initiative. If you do not work together to design a common good it is not possible to build a common home: our life without relationship is an island closed in itself, we must become builders of bridges for the meeting between peoples, just as invoked by the Pope. Religions, today more than ever, must be credible in a world that suffers from injustice: we must do everything to find the human essence”. After all, to share own culture – as Sira Fatucci (Councilor for Culture of the Italian Hebrew Center Il Pitigliani) remembers – “it can not help but bring people closer, persons: and cinema, in this, is a star that enlightens and draws around the attention of many”. Significant, then, how this new course of the Tertio Millennio Film Fest takes place on the 120th anniversary of the invention of cinema: “20 years ago, Pope John Paul II, on the occasion of the centenary, recalled the importance of this extraordinary form of art” Father Giovanni Epifani, of the National Office for Social Communications of the Italian Episcopal Conference, points out. ”To believe in God is a source of peace: living, seeing and telling. Exactly what cinema does. For this reason, I hope that the new Tertio Millennio Film Fest will represent the real opportunity for ecumenical, interreligious and intercultural dialogue: for mutual listening, to broaden our knowledge, to increase the possibilities for dialogue. And sharing”: this, finally, the wish of the FEdS President Don Davide Milani.
The 19th edition of the Festival will be inaugurated by the Concert Dialogo in Musica, on Sunday October 25th at 6 PM at the Casa del Cinema in Villa Borghese, and will feature musicians of various cultures, proposed by the religious Communities involved. The Concert will be presented by Lorena Bianchetti(Journalist and Host of A Sua Immagine, Rai Uno). It will be an opportunity for encounters and the sharing of traditions and characteristics of the religious Communities, towards an occasion of celebration and dialogue.
