“Men go to God when they are sore bestead, Pray to him for succour, for his peace, for bread, For mercy for them sick, sinning, or dead; All men do so, Christian and unbelieving”. It is hard to imagine a better soundtrack than the poem of Dietrich Bonhoeffer – martyr of Nazi madness – to accompany the entire seventeenth edition of Tertio Millennio Film Fest, which focuses on “Innocents in the storm. Cinema against the globalization of indifference”, says don Ivan Maffeis, President of the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo and President of Tertio Millennio Film Fest. The leitmotiv of this XVII edition is the metaphor of cinema as Ark, as a lifeboat for all immigrants and refugees of the sea: children voices, mothers silences, peoples suffering. “Here is an appeal, nearly a summons against indifference, from films that, as regards the chaos that affects the most vulnerable people, upset us through precise questions: they make the viewer realize how the brutality of evil fills the gaps left by surrender, by the non-fulfilment of one’s responsibilities, in the name of the obsessive worry about one’s own narcissistic pleasure». adds don Ivan Maffeis. H.E. Msgr. Claudio Maria Celli, President of the Pontifical Council of Social Communications, focused on the idea of cinema as “perspective through which the contemporary society and its changes can be observed”, explaining that communication is, above all, a “culture of Encounter” that leads us, as Pope Francis reminded, to fight against the globalization of indifference. According to the words of H.E. Msgr. Carlos Alberto de Pinho Moreira Azevedo, Delegate of the Pontifical Council for Culture, “cinema, as few other things, helps us not to abandon those energies that are fundamental for our lives. These films should encourage considerations and reflections on the themes of solidarity in order to change the approach to the tragedy of immigrants and refugees, overcoming the mere dialectic, within the communities, between rejection and integration”.The XVII edition of Tertio Millennio Film Fest it is organized by Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo in collaboration with the Pontifical Councils for Culture and Social Communications, the Experimental Film Centre and with the contribution of the General Directorate for Cinema of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBAC). The festival aims at giving importance to works that are not easy to find, thus offering the audience the opportunity to watch high quality movies which are often ignored by distribution chains. Moreover, the activities of the festival include previews and restored films of great importance for our film heritage.
